Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN Ok, time has come to plan a road trip. The road trip involves driving to idaho, and retreiving TRASHWAGON 5. to all be known i will be making the trip with a suspended license, and a WARRANT FOR MY ARREST in idaho.

What? is this another "jack move"?? i am afraid not. this time around i know what NOT to do!!

so far the current plan is to set out on March 19. the date is so because a film student in wisconsin has a hankerin to DOCUMENT the trip(this has been a background idea for tha last couple years....), so this would be a good opportunity for both of us

So far we need to decide what car to take. The RX, or TRASHWAGON SIX. if the rx goes, we need to fix the wheel bearing. so far the motor is trustworthy with over 1000 miles since the carb block swap. we will bring spare timing belts if one breaks, a 20 minute fis off the side of the road, open belts

If Trashwagon 6 goes, by then i will have an xt6 5 lug suspension, a full time 5spd trans. If the legacy axles will fit on the xt6 swap, i will install the best of the four, and take the other ones as spares. the rear axles are good, but so what if one goes if u got full time with diff lock. the only concern is my carburetor, it runs like dook, bad gas mileage, fouled plugs. if i can find a good carb, then its on. because i doubt i will have a turbo motor by then

The trip out will run past chicago, around then north to wisconsin, then minnesota, so dakota, wyoming, montana. just before idaho, we will divert north to whitefish montana, and eithe sneak into bonners ferry idaho, or have my car meet us at the state line 30 miles away. all i know is if we get stopped in idaho for whatever reason, i will be going to jail for the time it takes to equal 375 bucks of court costs that have not been paid. it will be 2043 miles out.

on he way back, we will be taking US route 2 thru montana, n dakota, minnesota, wisconsin the UP of michigan, and michigan itself to indiana. the ride back is 2037 miles

we will ride out in one car, and back in 2. So far MYOSS FEECE will be the driver out. but we need another driver for the way back. so far the only option at this point is ZANNY DOOK, who cant drive stick, isnt hiway travel seasoned but has a license. if he drives back, one of us will have to ride with so he can navigate the higway system, and not get lost

I will calculate fuel costs at 25 mpg, and 2.00 per gallon, for 1 and a half cars, for 4500 miles. that will give room for extra fuel for route deviations, and room for extra cash to be alloted for emergency.

the total will be 540 bucks. but with that estimate, if gas averages 1.75, then thats 25 cents times 180=45 bucks for extra gas, good for another extra 1125 divided by 2 = 562 extra miles for each car on the way back. i figure mileage will average close to 30 mpg for the most part, so 5 x 180=another 900 miles, 450 miles for each car.

but with all that extra slack, it should cover food and other costs with a comfortable margin. 25% of 600 bones will be 150 bucks, if we devote 25% to food, and 75% for gas. and 75 % of 600 is 450, should do it for fuel anyway.

I will save up at least 400, if not more, in one month if i can stash away 100 bucks a week. if i can keep 35 hour average then that will give me at least 200 dollar checks, and i dont pay rent as of yet, but when i get my apartment, my rent will only be 25 bucks a week(payroll deduction). Myoss Feece will save up towards 200 bucks to put in. we each pay half of gas on the way out, and pay each our own cars ourselves back. i will cover extra costs as food or hotel if needed

so the 19th is at least 4 weeks away. any extra money will go to insurance. What i will do is reinstate my insurance policy on my ride, and add tw5. i need to tenew my plate for tw5, to wear on the way home.

if we take the rx instead, insurance will be cheaper for this trip, since the RX is already insured.

Since i am going all thru these states, i am down for visiting if anyone is interested, emergency contacts and pit stops. and those of you who missed wcss5, now you can see a PAIR of trashwagons, my cars have never met yet.

anyway, that is the plan. if we cant make the march 19 deadline, we may film locally, and then piggy back on the boss's proposed trip to seattle, much easier and less expensive, but not as bold of a maneuver.

and i am going to bust a donut in CRAZYBOY's yard if he discloses his address, and if its on the way(check the alliance board) __________________

im sure any subaru is priceless over there... It's not about a reasonable price for a sube, it's about actually finding one __________________

Probably not, but then again this sounds like something my life usually lacks: PURE ADVENTURE. I'm not sure which of the constraints makes it more exciting: the possibility of jail time (always high up there), the possibility of highway breakdowns, or the running-out-of-money factor.

Sounds like a truly great trip, and well worthy of the film used to capture it.

Good luck and Godspeed!

"Mr Stubbs! Start the tryworks, we shall go forward laden with fire!"

(I'd double check the spare tire(s), take a couple road flares, gloves, flashlight(s), some premixed coolant, if the other wagon has been sitting for a while maybe some Heet additive. Make sure the wipers are in good shape too. Watch for semis with antennas and pace 'em. Definitely slow down when they do.)

good luck man! __________________

well, if you're going thru whitefish, mt..you shoudl get ahold of "mtsmiths", as he's in whitefish and may have some ideas... hopefully your rig's roadworthy as its been pretty cold (highs of like 5 degrees) in eastern montana and north dakota. Good Luck!! __________________

and don't forget your fine selection of rubber hoses and gas cans! Strap 4 good tires to the roof for spares. I'd take the least extravagantly colored car to reduce attention. __________________

wow, thanx for the luck wishes. yes, the guy in whitefish with the camo ea82 wagon, i got his pics on my server...

i will be running on 5 lugs, i will have 3 choices for tires, the xt6 14's, impreza 13's, or leganus 15's

i will bring one can of gas, (dont want to smell it all the way there
), i will bring all of my spare timing belts, too. i know exactly which tools to bring, for any repair, ask anyone who was at wcss5!!!

that and i got a lot of supplies and spare parts still in the trashwagon5. first things first, i am paying back Bradd for the bus ticket this weekend. then i can start saving

as far as "is it worth it over potential jail" i didnt build a car to aboandon it agross the country. the trip is only half complete. Trashwagon will pick up from where it left off, and return on its intended route back home. Furthermore, Zanny Dook will be present, as he was ONE of the 2 that went with me the last time. jail dont scare me, but it gets old having to start over again each time. but i will be safe and dare not step over the idaho line, since the warrant wont expedite or arrest out of state. (hence my 2 pullovers, 2 tickets, and numerous court dates here since) probation remembers the last road trip. i will tell the PO that im getting my car, dont know if i cant leave state. but thats that

if i were to be stopped, pulled over in idaho, off to jail. nothing i could do but ride out 375 bucks in court costs worth of jail time, back to where i was. but i will hand over the car and tell my dudes to hit the road, because if my car gets home, i could much care less about being in jail. thats how i would feel anyway. so that doesnt scare me. losing car forever scares me

all in all, this trip will be final redemption for everything since wcss5. Redeeming myself for my car, my friends, my job and everyone at work, and all those who helped us out last time.

as far as the least colorful car, its gonna be trashwagon6 (blue with orange stripe, hood scoop (NO SHEET METAL OR LIGHTS)
if its nut up to the task, it will be an 87 rx wit a blue fender, and an anus lift.

as far as tires, i got them out my anus, i will bring 2 tires, one in the hood, one on top. trashwagon 5 has its spare too, thanks to flowmaster87, edrach, and ezap. it also has 2 good axles and a good spare, thanx ed. it also has a good gas tank, vs a ruptured rigged up one the way out thx ratty2subaru. and a replacement fender from a catastrophic blowout thx bratsrus(jerry). straight bumper and passenger doors thx LUMPYCAM.
and thx BRADD for the bus home, the security of my car, and the patience with the boundary county judicial system. __________________

Tim, glad you found the board. i see your rapid response, i just dug this thread up after it dropped off the page. i take it yopu have been lurking?

i can conjure up some scrap metal or electrical conduit and weld up some sort of contraption. i dont know of any tripod mounts, but my digital still pics has a thread for one, maybe i can find a bolt that fits and make mounting studs? what are the tread demensions of the camera mounts? i think a hood mount would be best, at least we can watch the camera and catch it before it falls off

i like the idea of you coming over here first, we can pack and load up accordingly then, and get some film of the local scene, and the office environment

if you need directions or phone numbers, check this.
http://www.warpthree.com/milesfox/subaru/subaruframe.htm

yeah, thats the swap meet plan, but its the same place i am at, and all of my crew here at work

i dont know of any video cameras off hand, i know the boss has one, but i dont know if he can loan it out. maybe his church has one we can use?
try posting in the marketplace forum, someone here on the board may sell one, or borrow one, you never know.....

1: both cars cig lighters work. i can also wire in auxilary 12 sockets in the car, in other locations too(or outside the car also)

2: we can install a CB radio in the car we leave in. trashwagon5 has a cb, but iwill have to bring an antenna with. i can get a phone card for emergency calls, or to call members who would like us to stop by on the way thru

3: if you come in on I-69, get off on the kendallville/waterloo exit, head easton us6 about 10 miles. us 20 and the toll road both cross 69. if you take the bus, there is a stop in FREMONT, IN, right off 69 and the toll road, at a PILOT truck stop. if you do that, we can pick you up

if you have any plans or tricks for navigating around chicago, lets hear it, i would like to stay off the TOLLROAD, but every road in chicago is a toll road "expect long delays" the sign says from fot wayne. that toll road is the 3rd most congested road, following los angeles and huston __________________

CB radio. Awesome. Don't sweat the camera gear thing too much; that is, after all, my department. Anyhow, the threading should be the same as on your camera, it's a universal standard. I might also wind up investing in a "StickyPod" ( http://www.stickypod.com/ ), although the surface needs to be clean and smooth for the suction cups to stick (tested up to 110 mph!). If we have things correctly bolted and threaded though, no way will we lose a camera (I just don't really want to expose the GL1 to the elements).

I haven't really been "lurking" on here, per se, you just happened to post an update while I was registering a username.

As far as which vehicle; if possible, it would probably be more comfortable with four people, not to mention the aesthetic advantage, to take Trashwagon 6 over the RX. How dire is the TW6 situation presently? (I mean, at least with the wagon we can throw a rear seatback down and let rotating drivers nap in shifts...that, and I'd love a hood shot with that air filter scoop you built...)

Are there any supplies you guys need that I could round up? Reply With Quote

well right now the wagon needs its engine computer wired up, and some starter mounting issues need to be solved, plus i will be trusting a home made bellhousing adapter for 5000 miles

the RX has the same internal dimensions as the wagon, split rear folding seat. the only difference is the slope of the rear hatch takes some headroom in the wayback, butit still has the same sq. ft of floor in back, my 6'2" tall can lay back there and stretch out

we may go as far as mounting a roof rack, we would have to pull theheadliner, but a roof rack would stow all the take up room stuff on top

we want to pack minimal, for room, just clothes and stuff, we can tie down on top, and have cameras in the back. once we get there, we can divide up the cargo

as far as supplies, just bring emergency type stuff, a credit card would be good for EMERGENCY situations, but only if we cant pull thru with our own devices. a laptop wpuld be good for text documenting, and digital sstill pics, if you have one. but dont stress the laptop

maybe a STRONG MAGNETIC mount would be good for the camera? how big is the camera, we can be creative with the mounting in the car

There is honor in ALL honest work. I've scrubbed toilets, and if the marketplace in the future ever told me that was the best thing for me to pursue again I'd do it.

Ah! When I wrote the last post, I didn't know the RX was a hatch. I've since looked at a few more pictures. (I am assuming we'll be leaving the subwoofer box in Indiana...)

I have, in fact, toyed with the idea of picking up a Subaru eventually (or some kind of Toyota 4wd) as I'm moving to New Hampshire in a few years with the Free State Project ( http://www.freestateproject.org/ ) and they get snow like you wouldn't believe. And I'm from Wisconsin!

Hell, I'm even inclined to throw a set of rally lights on the front of my Camry. Bear in mind, I'm pretty heavily invested in the 1987-1991 Toyota Camry wagon. I have three of them, all navy blue. One driver, two for parts, one of which used to be my driver until a red-light runner nailed me. On top of this, I've talked five of my friends into buying them, for a total of eight among us.

The week before Miles' swap meet in Indiana, I'm heading out to Washington to cover the first annual Toyota Van Rally. Remember those old Toyota forward-control vans? Turns out they made a 4WD version that's quite capable. See http://www.toyotavans.org/ for more info on that. For a rally vehicle you could camp in, you can't do much better than an old Toyota van. Plus, it's genuinely surreal to see these little spaceship-looking boxes trek over rough terrain.

Also, I am fairly decent buddies with the owner of a small salvage yard not too far off our course (I believe you're planning on taking I-90 up thru Wisconsin, which goes through Janesville). I know he had a running, driving, fully loaded Brat a while ago. If a parts need turns up during the first day of travel, we have a solution. Hell, it's only ten miles from my folks' place, if Day One sets up that way. It may be more advantageous to make as much time as possible. I'm looking at the map and making a list of interesting things to see along the way. I know of, for example, a giant pink fiberglass elephant at a Citgo station just north of Madison...

The DVD will be available through my website, which, sadly, is still in development (I need to register the domain). I will also be having a premiere, hopefully, at the UW/M Union Cinema sometime in May. If I can get it together.

I'm also thinking of having the boys at Song Fight! ( http://www.songfight.org/ ) run a contest to generate original music for the soundtrack. From the pictures, I've ascertained that Mr. Fox has a taste for Nine Inch Nails...any additional stylistic preferences? (Most of the sound will be incidental audio. The Roof of Boom, for example, must be in the film)

would you know it, i was bumpin Nine inchNails: Closer at wcss5. the guy with the $13,000 hatch felt inclined to turn on his 6x9's as if to compete with the mighty ROOF OF BOOM. oh yeah, the cd is waiting with the car, i should bring a copy of DAFT PUNK: HOMEWORK (would be good for sountrack)

as far as getting a subaru, i would prefer it over the toyota, moreso that the subaru is more versatile with parts swapping, you can make an astounding rig with the right combinbation of STOCK subaru parts, subarus are modular, and multi-configurable

for example, trashwagon6: its a GL-10 mpfi turbo. it had a spfi block, with a earliar model carb. the front axle broke, so i ran in 4wd, the rear axle live. i bent the rear suspension, so i swapped on 5 lugs in back. so the last time i drove my car before throwing in an xt6 tranny and legacy 2.2 motor, it had 4 lug wheels in front, 5 lugs in back, a 3.7 final gear tranny and a 3.9 rear differential

so how far can you go with the film. as in independent festivals? indie film network? how long would it be? gots to have some DAFT PUNK in the soundtrack. wouldnt it be cool to find an animator to throw miles fox in the fur into the mix? i think some cuts of cop chase scenes would add to the effect(like a prequel, re-enact the first half of the adventure

i would like to plan the itenerary according to the first trips mishaps, such as air in fuel lines in chicago, the broken axle in onalaska/lacrosse exit quick pick gas station(cops involved), our luggage falling off the car in minnesota, the girls we stopped to help in their stranded SUBARU FORESTER (we left them alone, cause the sheriff was on the way) and the GAS TANK RUPTURE in south dakota, we get out of the car, robert goes "look the gas is leaking" and went inside. there i was laying in a parking space sized puddle of GASOLINE, with my finger against the hole in the gas tank, waiting for him to come out and help, all the while people are moving their cars out of the encroaching puddle of gas.
also, off the side of the road front wheel alignment in BUTTE montana, the narrow speeding escape from the montana patrol, and the green subaru that we passed us in montana, we passed him in idaho, and he passed us in washington as we were running out of gas.

i am going to think of how i will present myself in front of the camere, my style of dress, and my clever "catch phrases" myoss feece and iu can put on quite a show with the verbals! probably a lot of fat girl speak will be directed at me, oh well

i think the film should be at least 2 hours, as you know it wont be boring!

anyway, i just made 200 bucks working on cars today alone, so now i am sitting on $450 in the bank, and 75 in my pocket for the WV trip __________________

As far as music is concerned, I'm still not quite sure what the legality of everything is. As this is a documentary, incidental audio is fair use under journalism laws. I'm keen to see what I can drum up for original, royalty-free stuff.

Now, Fox, don't think too much about how the lot of you will present yourselves on camera. More than anything, I want to capture the natural state of affairs for you guys. I'm also interested in rustling up interviews with other figures in your life to provide a running counterpoint to certain anectdotes. Your boss, your mom, certain officials from Gibault, etc.

As far as how much will be done with the final product, there will be several permutations. First, there will be a 10-minute short for certain film festivals with time constraints.

Second, the feature-length documentary, which will be around 2 hrs. in length and be sent to any and all film festivals it's eligible for. If they pick it for Sundance, we go to Sundance. If they pick it for Cannes, we go to Cannes. (Shoot for the moon, I say).

Following from that, I'll be putting together a DVD and selling it through my website. The DVD will have special features like a Miles Fox art gallery, extra unused clips, some version of your web content (especially the history of your cars), maybe a lexicon of your lingo, and probably some other cool stuff. I'll work out an appropriate cut of the action for you once I know how the business will break down.

I will also explore the option of a miniseries format for cable markets, unlikely as that is. But we'll see. The form of this, as with virtually all documentaries, depends on what we actually get shot.

For the cop-chase scenes and other such "foreshadowing", what I was hoping, Miles, is that you could crank out renditions of your adventures in comic form. It wouldn't be animated (hand-drawn animation is ungodly expensive) but I think it's ideal; it puts the focus directly on you, your art, and your experiences. I mean, you're a heck of an artist. Let's use that, thematically. This is, after all, a portrait documentary of Miles Fox.

Depending on how well things go, I'll probably get some T-shirts and posters printed up, too. Reply With Quote

the trip to trogg in west virginia

yeah the rx is front wheel drive so I guess now it's just a beefed up 3-door right corky? j/k It is running good and has survived a trip to c-bus and back. the drivers front boot is torn no bigger than a fingernail, next to the clamp, and has a small wet spot around it from leaking grease, it will be fixed promptly after the trip to west virginia.

rear axle is also sporting a torn inner boot on the drivers side, if the axle were installed it would be on the drivers side. will be taking the rear axles along as a worst case scenario situation where a front axle is broken. I don't see any problems in the near future as long as it is fixed in time for the big road trip to trashwagon five and back.

the big trip

I would be fine with taking the rx and reliability wouldn't be questioned at all. Although I see your point miles about the headroom issue. I will be letting Zanny Dook take the wheel for some interstate driving and a stick shift crash course. I just hope he don't crash my car. I think he'll do fine though. I will be manning the wheel on the big city and congested areas of interstate travel, but Zanny Dook will be navigating and taking a CRASH COUSRE in out-of-state, insterstate sign reading.

However it is all on him to drive the tw5 home safely, and if he misses a sighn he can always watch to see what an RX does, lanecahnges, etc. I will be useiing my blinker and driving in a defensive/cautious fashion for the sake of Zanny DOOK, WE CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE HIM OR THE TRASHWAGON . will keep everyone posted on progress. __________________

if i could find the camera i would have a pic of "multi configuration mode" of the RX. i have this idea that when one side or the other of the back seat is folded down, the camera can be mounted and face either the driver or the passenger up front. maybe a 'pod mount to raise it up enough to see out the window/hatch __________________

can you handle a trashwagon !? dont worry, its all fit for travel. suppose you drive and let zanny dook ride with myoss feece, to give him a break. we can rotate who is with the interviewer, and keep 2 people to each car, you could get exclusive interviews with each individual, in rotation. give everyone a chance to tell their personal story and all, to add to characterism __________________

To get an idea of how some documentaries can be so entertaining, try to find a copy of Hands on a Hardbody. It concerns a competition to win a Nissan pickup truck over in east Texas. The beauty of it is the people, ordinary kooky folks thrown together in extraordinay circumstances. Very ironic statement, predictions about the upcoming event were taped in the begininng - nice approach. Then asking folks how they were preparing, if they had a 'training regimen', etc. Funny stuff.
Also, there is a PBS (IIRC) doc about 'noodling' - catching catfish by hand.
Also. the doc about spelling bees called Spellbound is OK. An old doc called Gizmo is cool but uses stock newsreel stuff with some narration.

I've enjoyed a lot of the First Rights movies from Hollywood Video rental - I think they have a systen for promoting indie-type stuff.

Really - Hands on a Hardbody is a hoot! __________________

Oh, we're in the business now. I just purchased a carton of 100 miniDV tapes off eBay. I plan on using less than half of those for the shoot and will be able to sell the rest of them to my classmates and possibly get all my tapes for free, if not make a meager profit on the deal. I also picked up a top-of-the-line DC-to-AC inverter. We have some serious juice now.

All I need now are some lapel/lavalier microphones. Anybody have a line on those?

Also, keep looking for those junky camcorders.

We are T-minus 10 DAYS and counting, people. Excitement is in the AIR.

Miles; how are those sketches of your misadventures coming? The film/video department apparently wants my classwork in the form of a 10-minute short, so I plan to focus on telling the basic history of Who Is Miles Fox and the story of your last roadtrip first and foremost through your artwork, using interview footage for a voiceover narration. Don't fret, though. I'm doing an action-packed two hour documentary extravaganza. Very little can stop us now. Remember, as the good Doctor said, when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro!

Also, see what we'd have to do to dig up all your various mugshots from your various arrests/incarcerations. I have an idea for a photo/story montage I'd like to incorporate.

the local radio shack deals in cell phones, i wonder if they would have anything like that. if worst comes to worst, we can be creative wit the mic. somehing like a computer mic or a headphone ear piece, or even a mic salvaged from a tape recorder to be worn on a necklace?

next weekend we will be getting the RX prepped for the run, we can add a 12 V power source, connected to the stereo's AMP wire(switched) since the speaker box will be absent. o that way you can set up in back, ride in back, or not have it interfere with the front console as a functional area in driving __________________

thanx for bringing this post back, much appreciated!!!

all is good now. things are going according to plan

the RX no has a good trailing arm, a 5-lug from the trashwagon six. so we have a bum leg so to speak, with a legacy tire.

we tried a 13 impreza wheel with the RX tire, but the rim did not clear the XT6 caliper. so by this measure we took out hte rear axles to save the LSD.

we will bring the axles, and a rear disk 4-lug pieces, as we may come across a trailing arm along the way.

we mounted this van console on the ceiling, reverse mount, and a CB. on the back side is the dome lite facing out, a van light with a switch, and ambient light

also in back is a 12 volt plug in.

we had the headliner out to mount the ROOF RACK. we will be substituting CARDBOARD for a headliner, to spare the original. as the van console is temporary "unfinished" for the trip.

has anyone ever made a conversion wagon?

we carpeted the way-back, for comfort. all of the bulky soft luggage will go on top.

the RX has proven its reliability having over 5000 miles since the turbo MPFI on carb block swap, open timing belts, and no muffler.

it has seen back to back 1000 mile trips, weekends in a row.

we will pack minimaly, as when we see trashwagon 5, it will come with spare parts and axle tools. room in back will allow one full body lying diagonally along the driver side folded rear seat. camera equipment will go directly behind the passenger side rear seat. clothes, blankets, or food can go in the rear driver's corner

tire iron and plug kit will ride with the spare tire, oil between batt/alt. the jack stows in the rear quarter, towstrap in the other side, axles in the smuggler's box.

tools will be packed minimally, subaru survival kit:
12mm socket, extension, ratchet
7/8 crank pulley wrenchbox/open combo
17mm and 19mm wrench
3/16 punch
combo 12/14 wrench
10mm socket, and wrench
8mm wrench
screwdrivers(stock soob unit)
pliers(stock soob)
spark plug tool(stock soob, use with 7/8)

little pieces of wire, ties, and odd screws, razor blades, tape

this is enough tools to do the timing belts, with covers, and axles, anything short of the head gaskets

if we planned on doing the head gaskets we will bring also:
1/2 dr ratchet, 17mm socket and extension, torque wrench
14mm socket and extension for 3/8 ratchet

2 of us will have 400 bucks cash each, with atm access to other money if needed. this trip is pretty well covered for, the only thing i am not sure about is what kind of time we will make.

but we have a full week anyway............................................ ........

its coming down to the wire now. we got the key to the apartment, the RX is all fixed, trashwagon6 is a rolling chassis...
we will be leaving early in the morning on FRIDAY MAR 19. we will make our first stop 12 hrs later in minneapolis area __________________

Golly! Think y'all might be able to call all the way down here to Texas with that newfangled gadget? __________________

I AM TRASHWAGON i have in my posession now a TRASHWAGON 5. did some "light" baja'n, broke some stuff, things fell off. but a bad ground and a blown fuse later, we are in sound shape to make our way home

so far we have almost 4000 miles behind us, about 5-700 to go, we are chillin at the "eyesore" i tell you his wagon and my wagon go hand in hand among the same caliber. he even had a "honk if anything falls off" , just as mine has.

the trashwagon ran out of gas a few times, it took the 3rd time to realize the gauge was not accurate, it runs out when the needle is right above the red. dont worry, the 3 gas jugs i had were stowed on top, and my electric siphon kit saved the day. took lots of pics at each stop, not to mention over 25 hors of footage. we still have another 25 hours of footage left to burn,...

the car is in sound shape, i had to replace the fuel filter, as it was done in from the faulty gas tank. i fixed the bulb in the fog lights at a burger king, got a nice sideways drift for the camera in the parking lots. now i dont have any fog lights from catching air in the sand pit here in iowa.

all is good, no conflicts. although we did get pulled over in the same town we met the trashwagon , it was the RX this time, for a license plate frame that partially covered the "indiana" on the plate

it looks like we will be heading thru the rest of iowa thursday. so if you mcbrat or shawn w woul;d like us to stop by, let us know when so we can pace ourselves accordingly

so what happened? .................................................. .................... __________________

Miles, Danny, Zanny and Tim:

Great to hear things went a lot smoother than last time around. You're almost home, and this story has got to have a happy ending, so hang in there... just a little bit longer.

I have always had faith in you guys, and I'm glad to see that your rescue mission was (will be) a success!! You proved something to yourselves - if not everyone else.

good luck, and I hope to see you guys in C-Bus real soon

Road Trip yeah so far we have made good time, and are making steady progress. Despite a few setbacks!
One flat front, replaced with spare, to realize it had a broken belt, swapped it with the back tire and replaced it at archemites place, thanks for the tires.
we ran out of fuel on the interstate pushing the gauge. rocked the car for another 1.5-2 miles, spittin and sputterin. Miles, Zanny, and I pushed the car for about a 1/4 mile or more. Tim filmed the experience.
Cruisin down the interstate in wyoming we lost the last two thirds of the RX exhaust. the pipe ends now under the shifter, turbo's really aren't that lound tho.
Upon getting the T.W.5 shortly afterwords we were pulled over (Zanny d. Tim H. in the RX). The Police approached the tw(Miles and I) and asked why we were stopped too. We explained the road trip and the circumstances of two cars. I was DRIVING trashwagon5, and was also the only one of the four of us who was searched. No citations issued.
Ran out of gas in the trashwagon a couple two times. The gauge was the issue.
Finally we changed a t.w. tire, for safe measures.
We hit up chef tim twice, he has the subaru hook up while pimpin a PHAT Hatch. He was really a cool check point.
Archemities was da bomb hooking it up on parts, as well as a needed "checkpoint". The trips seem more fun when your not going strait through non-stop. e.g.(fuel,RestRooms)

we are currently at eyesore's crib, resting up.
We should be home thursday/friday evening/morning.
We have covered 4300mile so far, in a RX 2wd diff lock, 3 four-lugz, and one 14in. five-lug on the drivers side rear. I have the rear axles in the smugglers box, to preserve the LSD. Only about another 700 mile to go. We are so close we can taste it.
and Oh yeah, I just installed a vacuum guage, on the turbo. Since the stock boost light is always stuck on, it kinda acts as a reverse boost gauge, showing fuel economy/throttle position.
Well keep you posted. __________________

Absolutely nobody can attract trouble like Mr. Miles Fox.

We return to Butler, IN, hours ahead of schedule (11:00 AM Friday) Shooting has gone well, we had 32 hours of footage in the can and had started our 33rd.

Both cars have performed flawlessly since Iowa. Both are parked securely in Fox's apartment driveway. Now, bajaing is the only item on the agenda.

Matt, the kid who we entrusted the place to, is unsure of whether his license is valid for driving the trashwagon . We walk around the block with the camera in tow to the BMV, which is literally on the same corner as Fox's apartment and shares a parking lot. The woman behind the counter recognized Fox and asked us to turn the camera off...something about a felony.

Well, Matt's license checks out OK and we return to the apartment. Fox takes a shower and falls asleep. Matt, meanwhile, took the opportunity to rip through a few joints by the window. Suddenly, the cops show up, triggered by a complaint by the BMV lady. They smell pot. I keep the cameras rolling as long as I can. The end result; both Fox and Myoss Feece wind up arrested, tapes #33, 34, and 35 are confiscated for evidence, Fox is charged with posession, posession with prior (a felony) and paraphenalia (an IN infraction), and Feece the same (minus prior conviction). $2500 bond for Fox, $500 for Feece (paid at 10% with surety bonds), AND THE TRASHWAGON IS SEIZED AS EVIDENCE. The engine wasn't even cold when the impound wrecker carted it off.

I have continued taping. 1ABAJA, Fox's boss, graciously posted bond. Fortunately, Fox knows the wrecker driver (a Subaru owner, in fact), and we will spend the better part of tomorrow trying to get the Trashwagon back and maybe get some bajain' in. So, yes, Fox was arrested again, yes it's mostly on tape (if I can get them back from the fuzz), yes the Trashwagon made it back to Indiana without incident...if but for a brief moment of freedom. Fox is free on bond presently. This will make for interesting film. The local constabulary have a deep, abiding hatred of all things Fox and seem to exist to incarcerate this man.

Liberty has been tarnished. Justice has been waylaid.

Anybody a lawyer?

FREE MILES FOX!

this is like way out of proportion. pushing the limits of the BPD, but they have the discretion to manipulate the situation, its pretty much a routine.

we will try to go recover the tapes tomorow, or at least make copies. this is out of control. it will see its day in court.

also i will see about retrieving my car from impound. its at maxton's, their tow guy hooked me up with the guy in edon. if it has been searched, i dont see why they cant let it go, the car is registered and legal. what the fo' __________________

trashwagon return? :madder: DID THEY HAVE A WARRENT? I'm no lawer but I feel they did not have proble cause. If they had been driving I say throw the book at them. I hate drives under the influence But since they were not in the car but inside the man should leave them alone.
Well sit back and chill the trip was a sucsess (sorta) have a cold one and reflect at the journy of a lifetime. A year from now you'll look back and have good laugh.

Hrm.... not a laywer either, but im pretty sure unless they were sent to your apartment in search of marijuana, they cannot hold it against you. Since the lady from the DMV called in the complaint, they should only work on that complaint. And unless she called and said "I see people smoking pot, go arrest them" then the weed shouldnt be a concern. Also, it does sound like too many people there know you Miles. If people just look at you, and call the cops then i say its time to get out of dodge and make a new life for yourself in a larger town. With more Subaru's prefferably.

reading of this i just coughed on my you know what. at least you got home first

unfortunately, if an officer witnesses evidence of something illegal no matter where or what, they usually have probable cause to search. smelling marijuana from outside of a residence, especially if one of the tenants has had legal problems due to marijuana before, is probably sufficient probable cause.

my advice: hope your video goes over well at Sundance and makes it all worthwhile. good luck. __________________

Re: Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN Miles:

I've said it once, I'll say it again: You've gotta get your ass out of Butler!! Too much bad blood, and the cops will never let you have piece of mind.

As far as the "charges", it's a total stretch to charge you, confiscate the camera and your car, because a friend was suspected/observed toking a joint. I'm not a lawyer either, but I do know the punishment is supposed to fit the crime. A Felony for running the camera inside the BMV is absolute BS. Tresspassing is probably as far as they can go with that.

Ok, I'll buy the "reasonable search" argument, but confiscating your property is certainly not reasonable. Patting down your friend, and you guys - maybe. Even if something is found in the car or on tape, the judge would have to throw it out because it was obtained illegally. Barney Fife blew it by jumping the gun. The Prosecuter would have had to give his blessing in advance to make that search stick.

Anyway, glad you made it back, and I'm looking forward to watching the tape. I've been cleaning out the garage, and I'm going to run some stuff out to Jim's that you and Danny might be able to use.

talk soon, John Reply With Quote

Re: Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN well, i have to wait till later today to have the car released by the police, get it out of impound. all of tims paperwork and cell phone is in the car, so we need to get that first.

we also need to have the tapes released, and if not that, at least have them let us dub vhs copies for their use(evidence) and let us have the copies

i will be requesting video cameras in the court room, and i will subpoenae tim, his camera, and the tapes in court, as well as all of the arresting officers, the land lord, and the occupying tennants. also the license branch lady, that evil wench!!

so far the car will cost 60 bucks once officer planck releases it. if the car has been searched already, they no longer have the need to hold it, as the apartment was released after seizure.

tim right now is going to the local butler newspapar, and i am contemplating countersuit against the BPD and the county. for one i get arrested on a circumstantial matter, then go on the road, and get arrested again when i come back, dealing with the same officers.

the whole event from the license branch to the search warrant, is all on tape, we got everything on tape tpo the point that anything further would have been confiscated, or tim would have been arrested for interfering with an investigation. suppose he could have filmed legally from across the street, but you know these cops, they probably would have exercised their discretion to have the camera confiscated for evidence. so tim played it "safe" for that one.

keep tuned, this incident itself will be an example of the libertarian cause that tim represents, it will be an example, i am goint to release all of my court and legal documents to tim for use on this project.

this has gone too far it will see its day in court __________________

Re: Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN Well, the Trashwagon is back in Fox's hands, we did some baja'in Sunday afternoon for the documentary (some rough stuff, too...could've used a skidplate out there...)

We shot over 40 hours of footage; I'll be editing almost full-time thru May and will hopefully have the finished product ready for the May meet in Butler.

As for the latest law enforcement debacle, currently, Capt. Planck said if we can get the real culprit of the pot smoking to fess up, they'll drop the charges. He knows who he is...we all know who he is...it's just a matter of time and honor. So, here's hoping it works out.

Also, the Butler PD still have tapes 33, 34, and 35, but since they don't even know what DV is let alone have a deck to play them, they will give them back if I dub VHS copies for them. This, unfortunately, couldn't be wrangled during the weekend and will necessitate another 12-hour round trip drive down from Milwaukee, possibly next weekend, to acommodate.

Other Subaru news from Butler. After we wrapped taping, we poked around with their EA82 sedan that had been sitting since January. Turns out it was just a bad fuse. So, the Butler boys have three, running, noisy Subarus to harass the police with. That, and the "Pigz Go Home" sign in their window, which has a direct sightline to the police station half a block down the street from their apartment. When I head down to dub the tapes we may repaint the sedan.

Also, acting on McBrat's lead, we found two awesome EA81 projects in the McBrat, Iowa area for $100 apiece (an '84 turbo 4wd wagon and a fully loaded '84 GL10 sedan) which we'll try to acquire during the Iowa meet. In connection to this, I'll have to pester Shawn to hang on to that beige EA81 parts wagon for a little longer...

Come on, now, Fox. Don't agitate until you're in the clear. Did you boys get those statements turned in today? The sooner the better. It's so easy to clear your name on this one. You don't need this heat now.

Re: Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN tim, the more thay act on this "aggravation" the more they are setting themselves up. from my perspective in the police station this morning, i think they realize that they are going too far, i bet the tickets dissapear?

but anyways, they DID write tickets, a total of 2 parking tickets and 3 infractions, matt, danny, and don(the sedan), as well as myself. so since we do have these tickets, we will present them to a lawyer. i have taken a log for each occurrence, and each of my visits with the police station, to show a timeline. i think the police didnt expect us to be so on top of this like we are. __________________

Re: Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN Just thought I'd give everyone an update on the situation; I've been going through the tapes and we've had some dropout issues. Might be the tapes, might be an issue with the camera, but the entire McBrat episode is just about useless. I'm not too concerned; the narrative needs condensing anyway. Also, in reviewing the tapes, guess what? The return to Butler is on tape 32, which I have.

So, the cops have twenty minutes of me interviewing Matt & Heather, the BMV thing, and two hours of themselves.

Which, in a new twist, they will not allow me access to without permission from the DeKalb County Prosecutor.

So, Miles, which prosecutor is on your case? Also, what's up with the Iowa Subarus?

Re: Road Trip II: TrashWagon's RETURN if you need those tapes for your own defense, then you should be allowed access to them.

I suggest that you submit the entire collection of tapes as evidence, and insist on viewing them in court in sequence to "demonstrate" why you need the last ones. that might scare them into giving them to you! __________________
